The ASSAI project partners came together in the kick-off meeting hosted by project coordinator Universidad Internacional de La Rioja (UNIR) in Spain on 17-18 March 2026.
Funded by the Erasmus+ Forward-Looking programme, ASSAI brings together a multidisciplinary consortium of universities, research centres, public authorities, and industry leaders from across Europe to tackle a critical question:
How can generative AI be used for assessment in higher education in a way that is responsible, trustworthy, and aligned with European values?
At a time when AI is rapidly transforming teaching and learning, ASSAI puts the spotlight on assessment, a crucial, still underexplored area and a high-risk domain under the EU AI Act.
Over the next three years, partners will work closely with policymakers and education stakeholders to turn real-world insights into actionable solutions:
- An ethical framework for the use of GenAI in assessment
- A technology watch tracking the evolution of tools
- Analysis of their systemic impact on higher education
- Practical policy recommendations and implementation guidance
While focused on higher education, the project’s outcomes will benefit the wider education ecosystem.
To strengthen the link between research and policy, the kick-off also featured a breakfast discussion with representatives from the Regional Government of La Rioja, a partner in the project.
Alfonso DomÃnguez Simón, Regional Minister for Finance, Public Governance, Digital Society and Government Spokesperson, highlighted the importance of ethical, human-centred, and transparent AI across public policy. He expects the project results to support innovation and citizen-focused public services beyond education.
Daniel Burgos, ASSAI Project Coordinator at UNIR, complemented this by saying that the project results will prepare teachers, educational institutions and policymakers to face the challenges and opportunities brought by AI in teaching, learning and assessment processes.
