Background
Generative AI is rapidly transforming how knowledge is created, evaluated, and certified. At the heart of this shift lies assessment, a cornerstone of education systems and the foundation of institutional trust.Â
Now classified as a high-risk area under the European AI Act, the use of AI in assessment raises critical questions around quality, fairness, integrity, and accountability. Yet the challenge goes beyond individual use cases. While AI tools are already widely used, their systemic impact on education systems, including roles, practices, and governance, remains uncertain.
ASSAI addresses this gap by helping education stakeholders move beyond compliance towards strategic, informed, and future-oriented policy and decisionmaking.
The ASSAI project
ASSAI is a three-year project tackling one of the most pressing challenges facing education systems today: how to use the potential of generative AI for assessment in a way that is responsible, trustworthy, and aligned with European values.
Funded by the Erasmus+ Forward-Looking Programme, ASSAI brings together a multidisciplinary consortium of universities, research centres, public authorities, and industry leaders from across Europe.
The project collaborates closely with policy and education stakeholders to translate insights from real-world educational practices into actionable policy solutions.
Target audience
The project outcomes will benefit multiple actors:
EU and national policymakers, education authorities, education leaders involved in governance
Learners, teachers, educators, education and training providers
EdTech sector
Research and innovation organisations
Industry and employers
Civil society and NGOs
Results
ASSAI will develop wide range of outputs mainly including:
- A comprehensive ethical framework for AI in assessment
- An analysis of the systemic impact of AI on higher education
- A number of technology watch exercises to monitor the evolution and capabilities of generative AI tools
- Practical policy recommendations and implementation guidance
Impact
The outputs of ASSAI will foster the organizational readiness and capacity of Higher Education institutions to meet the challenges of GenAI, and ensure that its use is effective, inclusive, human-centred and ethical. While the project focuses on higher education, its outcomes are expected to be relevant and useful across the wider education sector.
